Introduction

The men on this page are just a sample of the thousands of prisoners who passed through P.G. 59 during the Second World War. They represent the first Camp 59 POWs I was aware of in 2008. I had honor of getting the know three of the men first-hand—Ralph Hoag, Roland Rakow, and Neil Rorssell—through email, over the phone, or by letter.

Concerning the nationalities of prisoners of Camp 59, Giuseppe Millozzi, in his splendid study of Allied Prisoners of War in the Region of the Marche and Prison Camp at Servigliano, writes:

“According to the Italian military authority, in March 1943 Servigliano’s camp held: 1,445 British; 464 Americans; 4 French

“For a total of 1913 POWs, it should be noting that with ‘British’ Italian Authorities included other nationalities—Irish, Canadians, Cypriots, New Zealanders, Australians, Poles, South Africans, Palestinians (2), Maltese (2), Rhodesians (1) and Norwegians (6). Figures of other nationalities of the above POWs are in the Swiss Red Cross report that covers the same period. In the latter the total figure of POWs is 1902 and the slight difference of 11 POWs between the two totals is not of significance.

“During 1943 many English POWs were transferred to Sforzacosta’s prison camp (CPG 53) and also to various working camps in North Italy in order to make space for American POWs. In fact the number of the latter increased from 445 in March ’43 to 913 two months later, that is in June when the Red Cross delegates inspected the camp for the last time. The number of English POWs in the same span of time decreased from 1,337 to 313.

“All the POWs present in the camp escaped en masse the evening of 14 September 1943; exactly six days after the Armistice had been announced.”

The following list includes the 253 Americans identified in the U.S. National Archives database of WW II POWs as “returned to Military Control, Liberated or Repatriated from CC 59 Ascoli Picenzo Italy 43-13,” (or who died while prisoners).

Many American servicemen who were recaptured after the September breakout are recorded in the database as repatriated from German-controlled stalags. In the National Archives, the camp listed for each prisoner was the last camp they were interned in; some were held in a number of camps.

My sources for information about British and other non-American Allied prisoners have been less official. I am pleased to have been contacted by many in the UK whose fathers, grandfathers, and uncles were interned in the camp. I am grateful for the wealth of information they have sent me to share on this site.

I have recorded below names, military ranks and units, and notes concerning capture, internment, escape, and repatriation. The Survivors of Camp 59 site as a whole contains much more information—interviews, photos, and newspaper stories—on many of these fellows in individual posts. Use the site’s search feature to hunt for more information on any individual POW.

AUSTIN, ARTHUR

Arthur Austin died of pneumonia in the Camp 59 infirmary on March 5, 1943. Dr. Adrian Duff, who attended him, donated his own blood but got an infection and was taken to the hospital.

Fred Chilton and Norman Davison were sent to North Africa on the same boat, were captured together in Libya in April 1940, and were transferred from camp to camp together, eventually ending up in Camp 59.

After their time in Camp 59, the men were sent to separate camps and, after escape from their respective camps, both made their way north to freedom in Switzerland. They were later reunited in their hometown of Sheffield.

Poems by Fred Chiltern are recorded in both Robert Dickinson’s prison camp journal, “Servigliano Calling,” and also in prisoner Edward Smith’s book of poems.

CUMMINGS, PIP

Pip Cummings is mentioned a letter dated October 21, 1943 in which a POW only identified as “Eric,” writing to his mother and dad, describes the escape from Camp 59 and the actions of the men immediately after.

Four men, Bill Marcus, Ron (last name unknown), Pip Cummings, and Eric himself were together near the camp for a time. Eric moved on alone and the following morning the German rounded up those who had stayed behind.

Although the U.S. National Archives on-line POW database lists one serviceman with the last name of David returned to military control, liberated or repatriated from CC 59 Ascoli Picenzo Italy 43-1, and he is Cpl. Leroy C. David, Army Corps of Engineers from South Dakota, it seems this might be the same Bud David. In at least one other case, that of Clifford Houben, the address listed on the playing cards was the address he was stationed at immediately before he went overseas, not his original home address.

Edward T. Dzierzynski was one of three men who survived the crash of the Fyrtle Myrtle on July 16, 1943 at Pietragalla, Italy. The other two were Staff Sergeant Cyrus F. Johnson Jr. and Staff Sergeant Edward T. Dzierzynski. Robert Dulac was hospitalized in Potenza, Italy. Although the camp that Cyrus Johnson was in is not specified in the database, he likely was held in Camp 59 as well, as he escaped with Edward (official records indicate the two men returned to the Allied forces on the same day—”returned to duty, June 28, 1944″).

While he was stationed in Massachusetts he married; the address of Lowell, Massachusetts in Luther Shields’ playing card deck is the address of the newlyweds before Clifford went overseas.

Clifford Houben died in 1971.

Cyrus Johnson was one of three men who survived the crash of the Fyrtle Myrtle on July 16, 1943 at Pietragalla, Italy. The other two were Staff Sergeant Robert E. Dulac and Staff Sergeant Edward T. Dzierzynski. Edward Dzierzynski is listed in the WW II POW database of the U.S. National Archives as having been interned in Camp 59 (Robert Dulac was hospitalized in Potenza, Italy). Although the camp that Cyrus was in is not specified in the database, he likely was held in Camp 59 as well and escaped with Edward (official records indicate the two men returned to the Allied forces on the same day).

Escaped from Camp 59 with Corporal Howard F. Jones

Captain Millar served as chief medical officer of Camp 59. As the highest-ranking British officer in the camp after the Italian Armistice was signed, he convinced the Italian commander of the camp to let the prisoners escape before German troops arrived to deport them to Germany. He took this bold action in violation of a “stay put order” issued from London ordering all Allied prisoners to remain in the camps. He was decorated for this decision at the end of the war.

Surely this is the same Robert Mooney, but why his state of residence is listed as Mississippi is unknown. Perhaps he was stationed there before going overseas.

Escaped during the breakout on September 14, 1943. He and fellow POW Luther Shields traveled though the mountains assisted by Italians, including the Palmoni family of Montefalcone, along the way. They reached the Allied forces on June 14, 1944.

An Italian named Nello who was in the prison camp for being AWOL escaped with Luther and Charlie Lum. Nello lives in Servigliano.

Luther was recaptured by the Germans and spent the rest of the war in various German stalags; he was finally liberated from Stalag 3B Furstenberg Brandenburg, Prussia 52-14 in 1945.
